28m old waking and occasionally sleep punching

2yo DS used to have bottles which he would basically use as a dummy and woke regularly after 12pm. A month ago I got rid of them and after 3 nights he seemed to be sleeping better, and we even had three 7 hour stretches (not in a row). He is back to regularly waking (goes down at 8.30, crawls into our bed at 12, DH puts him back, he comes back at 3 then randomly 'wakes' up at 5am screaming and punching me). Any ideas on how I can stop the regular wake ups? And the violent sleep hysterics?
