6 week old sleeps all day and wakes 2/3 times a night

Does this sound normal?

I'm aware that I should start to inter-grate play/stimulation time into his routine but within about 10-20mins of me singing, smiling and showing him colour contrast toys he starts to yawn and turn away.

Really it's two things I'm asking:

If I cut down the day sleeps (at such a tender age) would he sleep more at night?

And

How much play time does a 6 week d need?

When I say wakes 2/3 times per night I'm counting night as 10pn to 7 am.

Waking 2-3 times a night at 6 weeks is good- DD is 5 months and I consider that to be an excellent night!

Re the day sleep, at this age just follow his lead. Some babies will need more or less awake time than others. DD had a fair bit of awake time but she doesn’t sleep much anyway.

At around 6-8 weeks babies start to differentiate between night and day, so probably a good idea to start a bedtime routine if you haven’t already.

I wouldn't cut the day sleeping down. Sleep fosters sleep. He's likely to be overtired and wake even more frequently if you keep him awake lots in the day.

Waking 2-3 times a night at six weeks old is normal. At the moment I'd be thanking your lucky stars he's willing to be put down to sleep and sleeping for some good chunks of time. Trust me, not everyone is so lucky.

I think a few toys/books during his awake time is fine, but try not to worry too much. He's still so tiny and will naturally have more awake and play time as he gets older.

If my 15 month old only woke 2 times a night I’d think I’d hit the jackpot.

All completely normal. 6 week olds will need very little play; the world around them is stimulating enough.

They don't really need proper playing with at that age, I used to show dc1 the blinds and he would be mesmerised Grin

Their attention span is literally seconds so 10 minutes is good going for play time! Just keep chatting and singing and they will eventually pay more attention to you.

Thank You all for such sound advice. My first ds was a 5-8 times a night waker so I know I'm very lucky with this ones sleep Grin.

I've just forgotten after 5 years what the really early days are like.
