6 week old non-stop sleep

I know I shouldn’t complain, but the last couple of days my 6 week old has slept constantly.

Two nights in a row now he’s slept from 10pm right through to 6am. Normally he would wake at 3 for a feed. He’s stirred a couple of times in the night, but our MyHummy toy wakes up and the white noise puts him back to sleep.

He also took a huge 5 hour nap in the middle of the day yesterday. Sometimes he’ll have 3 hours, but he always needs encouraging to go down, but yesterday he just nodded off in to a deep sleep in my arms and when I transferred him to his crib he was completely out.

As well as this, last night before bed he cried non-stop for two hours, which is quite out of character for him.

Is he going through a growth spurt, or could he be unwell? He seems ok otherwise, he’s alert when he’s awake; smiling and cooing away. Should I be waking him or just let him sleep?

Thanks in advance

Are you breastfeeding OP? If so you really need to make sure at 6 weeks that he is feeding regularly and having lots of wet and dirty nappies.

There’s a huge growth spurt around 6 weeks - as long as baby is still feeding well, nappy output and weight gain are good I would enjoy it

He’s bottle fed, and takes around 5oz every 3 hours, but yesterday I let him sleep through one of his feeds and I just fed him as soon as he woke when I gave him 5oz, then two hours later he wanted another 5.

He’s quite a big baby already, he’s in 3-6 month clothes due to his length, so maybe he’s growing again.

When my dd was 6 weeks, she would sleep from 11pm to 6am every night. She was a big baby too and by 11 weeks she was sleeping from 7pm to 7am consistently. She was exclusively breast fed. I wouldn’t knock it - some babies love sleep!

My son was exactly the same. From birth he used to sleep 7pm-1am and lots of similar 6 hour chunks.
The midwifes used to lose the plot and insist I woke him every 3 hours, strip him down to nappy, turn the lights on and open the windows. All this and he’d take an oz before falling back to sleep.
As long as he was gaining weight with wet and dirty nappies I would let him sleep.
I kept a sleep diary as it felt like he was sleeping about 20 hours a day at times.
By 12 weeks he was much more alert.

It’s more the sudden change I was worried about. It’s only in the last couple of days he’s become Rip Van Winkle. I’m sure he’ll change again no doubt!

6 week growth spurt!! Next week he will be up more often to feed more to make up for the missed feeds this week 😉

I would want to be sure that the baby was well .

I checked his temperature and it was 36, so I think he’s ok. Just being a sleepy cranky bag!

I’ve got a sleeper too, 5 weeks old and sleeping 7 hour stretches overnight and feeding 3 hourly in the day. Don’t knock it, I’ve had non sleeping newborns and this is much preferable Grin
