Early rising tantrums

My DS is 17mo and has been having one nap for about 3/4 months. He would go to bed very well around 7pm and stay there till around 6/6:30am with usually one wake up for me to retrieve his dummy (we took them away completely a few weeks ago and this went very well.)
The last 2 weeks he is awake any where from 4:45/5:10am but having the most epic tantrums within seconds of waking (this morning is over an hour and he’s still going). He clearly isn’t ready to wake up but will not go back to sleep. Because of the 5am wake ups, I then can’t get him to go past 11am for his nap, resulting in too long a gap between nap and bed and then an over tired baby. I really don’t want to go back to 2 naps if I can help it. Any advice on the early waking, tantrums at 5am and a way to get this back on track?
