Gradual retreat - getting past the hand hold. Screaming day 5 and 6. Weaning?

So gradual retreat has gone really really well. DS was self settling by day 4 with no tears. Now days 5 and 6 we cant get get him to sleep without a hand hold. He literally screamed for hours last night as I tried to get out of the room and woke so many times I lost count presumably because he realised I had gone. The only way to calm him was bf although it was mainly comfort.

Last time he screamed like this it turned out he was constipated. We started weaning 2.5 weeks ago. But he passed OK this morn (mushy sorry tmi).

He does suffer from reflux so i am wary of him crying hysterically (and I cant bare it).

Does anyone have any experience here? I can hold his hand but it seems like Ive swapped feeding to sleep to a new prop. I'm going to continue but to be honest if he cries like that I am not prepared to leave him.

Any advice welcome. Thanks.
