Totally inconsistent nights

I have a 7 month old that has not slept well since the start of this year. Combination of 4 month sleep regression, teething, a cold and cough and wanting to practice new skills in the middle of the night. He is breastfed and is on three meals a day. He sleeps in his cot in his own room - self settles usually within about 10 minutes in the cot for evening sleep - a few chats to his comforter and no tears. He is on 3 naps a day - usually two 30mins and one 1.30 - I tend to feed to sleep for these or they are in the pushchair.

His nights are just so inconsistent - some nights he sleeps 8-11 hours straight and others he wakes every hour. I don’t think it’s a hunger thing always as often just being picked up from the crib is enough to send him back to sleep though I do sometimes feed him back to sleep and he’s back down within 15 mins. I also don’t think it’s a self settling thing because he falls asleep on his own and can do long stretches of sleep when he wants.

I guess I’m just looking for reassurance that this is normal and I don’t have to ‘do’ anything to fix it and it’s just part of his development. I’m not prepared to sleep train him and in any case even if I was I don’t know what aspect I would be ‘training for’ as he can self settle and at such a young age I don’t want to deny him food in the night incase he is hungry. I find it so hard to know what to do for the best! Anyone had anything similar?
