Sleep training not working.. trapped wind?!

Hi, I am writing this as I lay in bed watching my 12 month old on the monitor wriggle around, occasionally cry out and now every 2 hours, up crying.

He has never ever been a sleeper. Terrible in fact. Every hour on a bad night.
We started sleep training, controlled crying, 10 nights ago. It started well, then since night 4 we've been up every 1-3 hours again. Apart from 1 night where he did 5 hour block. But that's it.

Sometimes he wakes and cry's suddenly. I tried dairy free for 5-6 weeks and this made no difference to his sleep so I don't believe it's an intolerance. But he has began to strain when we pick him up out of his cot and sometimes we get some farts. But he seems in pain?! Could this be the reason for his very frequent wake ups through the night? Any one else had this problem?

Day times are fine, most days he's a happy smiley little boy. Very active. But as soon as it's night, he's a different baby!! Loosing my mind with sleep deprivation and just need help and answers.

Thanks
