Monitors video vs audio

Just looking for opinions on monitors. First child is due in June and DH fancies a video monitor. I'm
concerned that watching this screen could take over our lives and we should stick with an audio monitor (and they're cheaper!)
Anyone care to share their thoughts?

I think the video ones are great especially as they’re slightly older. My youngest is 1 and if he’s having a whinge rather than a proper cry then I’ll leave him to it but if I can see he’s thrown his comforter out of the cot then I’ll go and get it!

We had audio only till we switched DD to a bed, then we bought a video one.

Agree video really useful to see if just whinging or properly awake. Also if sitting up or lying down and where dummy is if needing to go and retrieve it. I like to know when DS is actually asleep too (if we’re goinf out for example) and without video I wouldn’t know. He can lie there awake but silent for ages!

I thought similar to you and I'm glad I didn't get a video monitor. I know that sometimes when I put DD down for her nap she has a little play and climb around the cot first as I can hear that she is but it's easier to ignore if I can't actually see her antics!

Once DD is in bed in the evening I like to get on with my stuff and I don't feel the need to keep an eye on her visually.

We got a video one and the first few times we used it we were glued to it but that passed quickly enough. You learn to relax. We got a tommee tippee one that if it wasn't charging, the screen would go black til the baby made a noise and then the picture would come on. Very good for stopping you watching all the time :)
