Just that really was wondering as DS is starting to climb out of the cot now he is 21 months and I'm scared he going to hurt himself?

Pennywhistle, you misunderstand my post. I'll add some emphasis:

Teaching toddler not to climb out of the cot is exactly the same as teaching a toddler to stay in bed.

Not that getting out of a bed is the same as getting out of a bed. Because clearly they are different.

Many (not all, for clarity) cot climbers become the mess-around-at-bedtime types when in a bed. The unwanted behaviour is just shifted rather than solved. And teaching appropriate behaviour at bedtime (to lie down quietly on the mattress) is exactly the same in a cot or bed. It's just a million times easier in the cot, as I said.

I understood your post Fate, I just disagree.

Teaching good bedtime behaviour is much easier when you aren’t worried that they are going to break their neck/arm/choke themselves.

Apart from anything else toilet training is considerably easier when they can nip out of bed and use their potty/the loo without difficulty.

Just done it at the weekend. He’s 3.5. Never had the problem of him trying to climb out the cot though, even though he loves climbing! (Reckon it’s because he loves sleeping more).
The reason we’ve waited is because now he’s at nursery in the afternoon and really tired at night, he actually asks to go to bed. So, he won’t keep getting out. It’s worked.

Worked so far, I should say!

DD was about 20 months when her brother needed it.
He was climbing out and crashing to the floor at 15 months. The slept in a normal bed, in fact they shared a double and didn't crash to the floor.

About 10 months

2 and a half. Just bought her a new mattress for the bed she moved into. She's now 11.
We used a bed guard and brought out her baby mattress on the floor where she was most likely to fall onto. She never did. I used to kip on it if she was poorly.

Exactly 2. She started hurling herself out of the cot and the injury potential freaked me out so we did the switch quite abruptly. It was a bit of a nightmare getting her to stay in bed but she's 91st centile so was ready for the extra room.

17 months. We moved him into his own room at 16 months so he could get used to his own room in his cot. Then we put him in his bed a month later. Only because he hated being in the cot, and I knew he would be much happier in a bed. He wasn't climbing out as such, but he wasn't happy in it anymore.

Mine turned two in February.
Still in cot in a sleeping bag.
She stays laying down until I go get her up after she's woken .
No sign of trying to climb
