How did or did not white noise work for you?

My about to be six month old daughter is a terrible sleeper, has always been bad but is now waking up every 30-90 minutes a night. She's exhausted, as am I.

We've had white noise on since she was about 3 months and it's clearly not making a bit of difference so I'm wondering what other people's experience of white noise is? Did anyone find it aggravated their baby or did you have to experiment with different types of noise? As she's always been in our room we've had to use a noise that we can sleep through so perhaps it's not been loud or invasive enough?

Would really appreciate any thoughts and advice!

White noise only worked when my baby was already tired.

I'm wondering why you use it if you've been using it from three months and it doesn't work?

White noise didn't do anything for mine. The nurses in SCBU suggested whatever my favourite music was, just on low. The effect was amazing. You'd think it would only be melodic stiff, but try anything. Mine liked Shed Seven HmmHmmHmm

4 month sleep regression is a killer.

Dc has two different white noises for naps and sleep. He has baby got colic on loop for nap times (2-3 hour nap, search for it on YouTube and you can buy it on iTunes if it works) and random rain/waterfall noise for night sleeps and usually sleeps through. The noise needs to be quite loud to be of any use, Ewan was far too quiet.

Only problem is if the white noise is interrupted he wakes up within one minute.

I've used white noise with both my DC. My DS (4 months) won't settle without it. We have a My Hummy that turns on if he stirs in the night. Works wonders.

I still use white noise with my 11mo. It was one of the only things that worked when she had colic months back and we resort to it whenever she needs a little help dozing off. I use an app and at first the vacuum cleaner noise worked and now I use one called driving in the rain. It doesn't tend to work when she's not tired. I find it also often works when she wakes up in the night. However it's not ideal if you're trying to get to sleep too! Also I think she may have a sleep association with it now. We've not done proper sleep training with ours so perhaps you might want to try that instead?

I've used white noise on both mine. Still using it for my 15 month DS- he didn't sleep through until 10 months but he woke because he was genuinely hungry up until that point. It signals sleep time so never any trouble going to sleep and sleeps 12-13 hours a night. My 5year old DD now asks to sleep with it on again. Use a white noise machine from Amazon.

I used white noise with both of mine in the newborn phase, for my current newborn I use it in the evening when he’s having a fussy/colicky time. For my older one I think I used it in the night on and off for a while up to 6-8 months. I think around that time we found he responded better to music so switched to that

Rubyroot because god loves a trier

Ok thanks for your experiences. It's tricky as if she's in with us then the noise can't be too loud or we can't sleep! I might test out the music idea for the (currently awful) naps. I used to love Shed Seven!!

I accidentally used a ceiling fan as it was warm but when it got cold I tried to find a fan noise on YouTube but none of them worked. Went back to the fan with heater on. Only did it until about 12 months.

FortheloveofJames · 10/03/2018 19:47

We use white noise for DS- 9.5 months- for all sleeps, including all night. We just use the same track from Spotify playing on repeat. I agree that it needs to be loud. It’s a great sleep que for him, as soon as I put it on he lays his head on my shoulder.

bobstersmum · 10/03/2018 19:52

Worked for all 3 of mine, but needs to be played loud! And try several different ones because there will probably be a particular noise your baby takes to
One called white noise baby my dd likes oscillating fan, and one called baby soother my ds and dd both like running stream!

iklboo · 10/03/2018 19:54

We used ocean noises for DS and a rotating star light.

pipnchops · 10/03/2018 20:00

It worked a treat with DD1 for the first three or four months but didn't work at all for DD2 just seemed to make her more livid!

pipnchops · 10/03/2018 20:03

Sorry, forgot to give you any actual advice there! Maybe try classical music or lullabys. Only thing that worked with my DD2 to calm her down was rocking or feeding.

IWantMyHatBack · 10/03/2018 22:10

Haha, sorry Grin
