Newborn won't sleep!

SO my 3 week old baby always falls asleep whilst breastfeeding and won’t fall asleep any other way. As long as she is laying on me after feeding she will stay asleep, though occasionally will squirm about which I assume is wind. I only wind her when she does this, otherwise it wakes her up and then she won’t go back to sleep.

If I try and put her to sleep in her next2me crib she will instantly wake up and cry and I will have to start the cycle again. She’s also sick when she’s put on her back in the crib, she’s never sick when she sleeps on me. I’ve tried keeping her upright and winding her after feeds but this also makes her sick, and she won’t settle again. I keep persisting with winding her after feeds then putting her down but it just leads to her crying and putting her hands to her mouth so I am CONSTANTLY feeding her.

I don’t know what to do as I can’t hold her all day every day, but equally I’m not sure if she is finished feeding when she’s falling asleep at every feed, and as she won’t go to sleep any other way it seems like a catch 22! i’ve tried swaddling, raising one side of the crib, putting a worn t-shirt in her crib etc and nothing seems to be working! The constant feeding and lack of sleep is making it really hard!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My 3rd DD was like this and after the first couple of weeks my sister who is a GP told me to give her a dummy - I was dead against this and battled on for another week before trying it.... and it worked!

World's a brand new scary place and your her safe place. Would you consider co sleeping? I never thought it would be for me but gave up trying to settle him in his moses basket. Coslept until they were 4months now they sleep through in their own cot in their own room.

Dummy and a sling...it will change your life..I'd recommend the close caboo.

Also Google fourth trimester...it will make you feel better.

This is totally normal, neither you or baby are doing anything wrong.

Try:

  • cosleeping
  • dummy
  • sling
  • sleepyhead
  • swaddle

A mixture of the above x

They don’t sleep.

Pull your socks up, you’re in for a tough ride

You need to be firm. And put her in her own bed.x

You’ve had some good suggestions
and also this is just what babies are like. They don’t call them “sleepless nights” for no reason.. I mean that kindly.

Just keep doing what you’re doing. Your baby is so new to the world and doesn’t understand a single thing around her, she needs you, all the time. Just take it day by day and don’t try to force her to sleep. Forget the chores, buy easy to prepare food and just hold on tight! Flowers

Hmm

Alternatively, join the 21st century where we have better understanding of child development, and particularly the fourth trimester, and enjoy the snuggles. You’ll miss it in the future. ;)

Fluteytootey · 28/02/2018 20:35

Ignore Madhaus. You can't be firm with a newborn!

jbee1979 · 28/02/2018 20:40

Google the fourth trimester. I too thought that babies should sleep in cots and do more than a 10 minute cat nap. I had a rude awakening.

betterbemoreorganised · 28/02/2018 20:52

As others have said try a dummy and a sling, also try pushing her out in the pram. It’s takes a few weeks but I’ve been very successful with the pram nap association ( unfortunately I’ve failed on the cot nighttime) and it gives me a few hours in the day.
