Hi guys,

I am due a little baby girl in July and as a firs time mum, I am after a few tips.

In terms of a night time routine, do people tend to put the baby to sleep upstairs in a moses basket or sleep downstairs with parents until they go to sleep? I am trying to gage whether I will need a baby monitor for the first 6 months.

Thank you :) xx

In the same room as you for all sleeps for the first six months.

In the same room and I wouldn’t even attempt a routine until minimum 6 months, we followed baby’s lead and got a predictable pattern going at 8 months. They’re not robots, and are all different so a routine that works for one might not work for another :) x

I put my 4-month-old to bed at 7ish and sit with her in the dark when she goes to sleep! I don't want to leave her due to SIDS guidelines and she can't settle downstairs. It's a pain but at least she sleeps (well usually, she has hit the dreaded 4-month regression). We follow her lead and she's settled into a rough routine of sorts at bedtime (for now anyway). As a newborn we had no routine at all, we just did what we could to survive!

We have a baby monitor that someone bought for us and it hasn't come out of the box yet, I would wait until you actually need it as they may bring out new models or have deals on etc.

In the same room as you for all sleep until 6 months so yes, downstairs with you in the evenings.

But don't expect a newborn to have a sleep routine. He or she will sleep most of the time in the first few weeks so it doesn't really matter and then slowly it'll come together.

Don't expect too much and go with it. Good luck!
