Crying in sleep - normal?

Just looking for some advice really...my 6 month old lg seems to cry in her sleep quite a bit. It only seems to happen in the first half of the night (first few hours of sleep) She can sound desperately unhappy as though she's in pain and whimpers too, but stays asleep while I sush and pat to try and reassure. The odd time I have woken her up but she then seems fine on waking. Is this normal? Should I be waking her? I don't want her to be in pain. But also don't want to wake her unecessairly. This seems to happen every night now. Sad Any pointers much appreciated.

My 14 month old DS always cries in his sleep. I think it might be when he is coming into lighter sleep and moves sleeping position. He never cries long enough for me to have to go in. My DD never did this.
