How safe is co sleeping?

Anyone know re the above. Ive started to bring 9 weeks old DD into bed with me in the morning(from about 6ish)just so that we can get a bit of extra sleep. But im hearing conflicting advice.
I lay her on the quilt and wrap pram sheet around her, I sleep with my arm under her head which stops me from being able to roll over and I move all pillows away from her.
Thanks

I did that when my ds was your dd's age, anything for sleep! Be warned though, that now at 2.5 he is pretty much fulltime in our bed (the best contraceptive known to man according to dp, through gritted teeth), which we're happy with, but still..... There are some reccommendations about not drinking/taking drugs which it's best to be aware of, & also not letting the baby overheat, but it sounds like you're aware of these. Great if you're breastfeeding too. Enjoy it!

kbaby, we do the same around the same time for that one hour or so and it is lovely - plus he makes a great reminder for DP to get up! I make him do the 5/6am nappy and I do the feed afterwards. Once DP is up and out we settle back down for a snooze until 9ish. Luvly.

DS sleeps in his basket all night but if he wakes after 5 then he comes into bed after that feed. Just have to add that DS likes that hour or so when Mum and Dad both want snuggly cuddles without feeling so tired they might roll over - he would never come into bed if that were the case ...

Why does no one ever ask is it safe for my baby to sleep all by himself in a room by himself for hours on end?
Co-sleeping is one of the best things you can do for your baby and for you.
Here is a look at the risk of SIDS from Mother and Baby sleep lab it offers a lot of sound advice but tbh it is all common sense.
I would never roll on my baby I always know where he is and if he moves.
And another leaflet on how to co-sleep safely babyfriendly
There is also a cushion that stops you from rolling over I can't find the link though.

That's exactly what I was thinking. We cosleep and I would be terrified of not doing so.

I've got a copy of three in a bed you can have kbaby if you want it - email me if you do and I'll post it.

Clayhead · 28/07/2004 21:11

Tigerlillies, that is the most sensible comment I've seen in ages - you've made my day (I also have a pushchair where dd/ds faced me, but that's another thread) .

I don't tell anyone in RL that we co-sleep anymore as I get such bad reactions. My HV wasn't willing to discuss it with me at all, not even to mention the dos and don'ts. I got all my advice from 3 in a Bed and MN.

I love it.

So long as you follow the normal common sense rules, I believe co-sleeping to be perfectly safe. Lets face it is only really in the developed Western nations where seperating baby and mother for sleeping (or aythign really) is considered the norm.

mears · 28/07/2004 21:15

I slept with all four babies when feeding during the night. Although not technically planned co-sleeping I made a point of sleeping while doing night feeds. I am afraid I also used a quilt and baby was invariably under it

suzywong · 28/07/2004 21:21

same as Mears for two babies in my case

iota · 28/07/2004 21:25

ditto suzywong

Clayhead · 28/07/2004 21:28

Clayhead · 28/07/2004 21:36
