Nightmares

So my son is 3 and keeps waking up crying, or should I say is more like sobbing and sometimes asking for help or crying for mummy. I go to his room and cuddle him, sometimes I just sit there talking to him and stroking his hair. It takes him a while to calm down and he's really upset and seems shaken up.
This can go on for quite a while and it's been 4 nights in a row now :(
Is this just a phase??? What can I do???
