Got rid of dummy and now 2 year old won't settle at night

We got rid of our 2 year old's dummy a week ago. We explained to him the dummy fairy needed it and he seemed to understand and was happy to give it up. The 1st 2 nights were fine - a bit of grizzling but he settled and slept through the night. Since then it has got progressively worse....he doesn't want to go to sleep and then cries and shouts for about an hour. I don't think he is upset, as when we go into him he immediately stops crying and pretends to be asleep!! He isn't asking for his dummy either, but he's obviously finding the transition difficult. Any tips on how to manage? I don't want to keep going into him, but equally it's really hard listening to him crying....

Give him it back and try again when he's bigger? 2 is still very little.

Has he got another comforter to replace it? If not, maybe let him choose then buy him a new special toy which can be his bedtime buddy?
