My 6 month old has suddenly started doing something quite strange in his sleep. He will suddenly lash his head from side to side quite frantically. Seeing this on the monitor on Friday night, it looked like was possessed. As we were worried, I picked him up to comfort him as thought he was awake and he was fast asleep. Saturday night I put my hand on his chest and made ssshhushing sounds. Sunday, I did the same. He also makes whimpering sounds whilst doing it. My first thought was that he was dreaming. But then he is teething and I wondered if it was the discomfort of teething possibly affecting his ears? Another thought was if it was from overtiredness and getting restless as he has stopped taking his afternoon nap but by 6pm he is tired and we try to stretch him out till 6.30/7pm for bed. My last thought was if it was related to solids. We have started him on solids and thought it may be his digestive system causing him upset or reflux until his system gets used to solids??
It has been quite worrying watching him do this and wondered if anyone else experienced it and what was causing it.

My nine mouth did also does the head side to side thing. She sometimes does it in her sleep right before she wakes and wants a feed. I also found she does it when she is tired. I was concerned at first but been told it’s fairly common and they do it to try and settle themselves. I would double check with your hv if your concerned
