Grunting Baby

Hi all....just wondering of anyone has any experience or advice reference my 4 week old ds. He grunts.....a lot!!! Often its in his sleep...which is ok for him (doesn't seem to hurt etc??) but it keeps me and dh awake sometimes as its so loud. I am very very lucky as he sleeps really well (for now) but this seems to be getting worse.
Anyone know what it is? Is he in pain? Is there any way i can help relieve this?
He is a windy baby.....top and bottom...is it just this??

That's normal for some babies...our twins sounded like a farm yard of geese and pigs! They were premature and had reflux issues but never seemed in pain with it and slept very well...unlike us! My friend's son was incredibly noisy too but no reflux or wind.

I think grunty breathing is GP job.

I may be wrong though. - can you check with your HV?

Dd was like this too, she wasn't refluxy or anything. Think it's just something they 'do' as newborns unless any other signs of something!
They will eventually outgrow it :) x

I second going to the GP. My son grunted when breathing sometimes as a baby. It was the only symptom of asthma (though they didn't call it that till he was older). He didn't appear to struggle to breath and was fine in every other way. He was prescribed an inhaler.

That's what newborns do.

I should add that the asthma grunting was just when he breathed out. Little babies do generally make odd noises!

There was a baby grunting on Hayes half dozen and it turned out to be a hernia. So please get him checked out by a health professional.

Sorry, posted too soon. That wasn't meant to scare you, just to say probably worth going to GP or HV.

My eldest did this until he was 10 weeks old. My youngest only did it for a couple of weeks. Neither were distressed, just noisy! I resorted to earplugs at one point

Just read the other posts. Neither of mine have asthma or any other issues. They just sounded like piglets as newborns!

My ds did this and it got steadily worse till he's breathing was constantly very noisy. We were told he had laryngomalacia. He went on to develop a concave chest and has other issues. It's definitely worth a GP visit.

My DD grunted all day and night as a small baby! The midwife said it was normal and nothing to worry about. DH and I would name the sounds - 'that one's a pig' 'she's a sheep today', that sort of thing.

It was cute in the day but at night it was quite frustrating as it meant we were getting very little sleep, so when she was three weeks old we moved her into her own room. She gradually grew out of the grunting. I forget exactly when, but she's 14 weeks now and it feels like she stopped ages ago - maybe at around 8 weeks. I suppose we could have moved her back in with us when she stopped, but she was used to the other room by then.

Thanks all. I see the hv in a couple of weeks. Will mention it then if its still happening. Also at dr's 6 week check.....best to be safe i guess in case it is a health issue. It seems worse at night.....but has grunty phases in the day too. It does ease when hes feeding.....so i wondered about reflux?

My DS3 is 12 wks and he’s very grunty - he was my only C-section and I think they’re more mucousy!

It’s probably nothing to worry about but it’s always best to get everything checked when they’re this little.

My little one used to grunt so bad!!!! He would grunt early hours of the morning, it was mad. He grew out of it at about 3 months xx

Maybe make a recording to play to the HV / GP when you see them?
