What time does your newborn fall asleep?

Just asking because I’m curious - my nearly 10 week old little boy sleeps really well once he goes down for the night but it’s just that he doesn’t actually go to sleep until really late! Following SIDS guidelines he stays with us in the living room until bedtime but he will regularly stay awake until 11/12 before finally falling asleep. Once he’s asleep it doesn’t matter how long he’s been asleep, he’s quite happy with me getting him in to his love to dream swaddle and taking him to bed for a feed in the dark with white noise and he’ll sleep for 5/6 hours before waking for another feed. I’m really just wondering if he’ll start falling asleep earlier than nearly midnight or if I actively have to do something to help him fall asleep earlier?

He’ll get there on his own. You are doing a great job x

My DD is ten week old, she has a bottle at 10ish, she's just fell asleep about half an hour ago and she will wake about 1ish for another bottle then sleep till 7/8ish

@georgeofthejungle thank you 😊 I’m just doubting everything as he’s my first and want to make sure I’m doing right by him!!

@ew1990 thanks for your reply - I’m glad to know that someone is in a similar place! My boy is ebf so it’s harder to put a time on it as he’s still feeding on and off all evening. I’m hopeful all this feeding will lead to a big stretch of sleep tonight!

@Snoozysleepthief I hope you get a good stretch!

DDs awake again, she's napped really well today so hoping that doesn't affect tonight as normally she only catnaps during the day

ew1990 · 13/01/2018 00:27

On Tuesday she woke at midnight and didn't go back to sleep until 6am!!

Ds is now 7 months but we used to call him the Cinderella Baby as he would always settle at midnight on the dot. We left him to find his own bed time and he now asks to go to bed at 7.30pm. He must have been around 4 months when it became 10pm and then it just got earlier. Now we have a good routine of dinner, bath, book, milk and bed. They get there when they are ready.

I'm glad I saw this thread as I thought it was just me that had a baby who goes to sleep late. My dd is 11 weeks old and normally falls asleep at eleven/midnight and will sleep through until half six. Like you we have her downstairs with us in the evening as I was following nhs advice but I was starting to think midnight was too late and I was doing it all wrong

Snoozysleepthief · 13/01/2018 00:36

@ew1990 Tuesday must have been a good night for it as ds did EXACTLY the same - midnight till 6am!! Keeping fingers crossed for you too - he is asleep as has been for about an hour so just about to make the move to bed :)

@nonocharlierascal that’s great to know, 7:30 is amazing!! I’ve tried with a routine but with him falling asleep so late I feel like it’s quite disjointed so just going with it just now :)

op go with it. I miss the days he stayed up late! I know that sounds bizarre but the evenings are so full so early now. We used to love just playing together and taking the time to be a family. Plus we would pop out for a cheeky drink with him and visit friends or even get the food shop done when the shops were quiet. Now we are tied to meal and bed times and I miss him in the evenings saddo

PinkFluffyBlanket · 13/01/2018 00:47

I don't understand people who put their newborns to sleep at 7/8pm? I personally found it so much easier to take baby to bed late with me, mine both had an 11pm bedtime until they were a few months old and I gradually reduced it to 10 then 9 then 8 when it was convenient for me (when I wanted my evenings back haha). Much less pressure in the long run!

You're doing amazing OP and a huge congratulations Smile

Meowstro · 13/01/2018 00:47

Mine was the same. We've hit a sleep regression so it's back to about 10pm for the time being but before that at about 4 months DD decided for herself 8pm suited her.

Snoozysleepthief · 13/01/2018 01:02

Wow you’ve all made me feel so much better about it!! It’s so hard when you have nothing to compare it to and you totally question everything...I’m quite happy to go with it and hope that he’ll naturally start wanting to sleep earlier. At the moment it suits me better for him to go to bed later and get up a bit later (purely selfish reasons haha!) while I can so I should probably just enjoy it!!
