Anxious Sleeper??

Hello,
Looking for some help/tips regarding my 1yo son.

He was a very good Sleeper, in his cot and in his own room.
However, he was very unwell for around 2.5 - 3 weeks and was in our bed during this time. Biggest mistake we could have made, but you do literally anything in those moments.
The transition from our bed to his has been a nightmare. We even brought his cot back into our room to get used to it again. He'll fall asleep but soon as he's put in the cot, he wakes and screams. Tried to leave him but he becomes inconsolable.
Now, still in our bed he will wake during the night just to make sure we are there. He wants to hold onto one of us while he sleeps, if we move he moves with you.

I've thought about ordering foam bed bumper things so if he was in his cot, he would feel them and think it's us?
Has anyone else had this problem, if so, do you have any tips?

Many thanks.

Can you get rid of the cot altogether, get him a toddler bed and sleep on the floor of his room? Some people think toddler beds are pointless but they were absolutely vital to move both of mine away from co-sleeping (which is NEVER a bad decision so don't beat yourself up - you gave him what he needed, when he needed it). He can fall asleep next to you to begin with. You're only on the floor next to him when he wakes so can pop back up again.

Reduce this to falling asleep with an arm over him after about a week, then an arm for reassurance in the night. Then gradually just you sleeping in his room. Very gradual withdrawal if you will.
