Newborn sleep

DS2 is 2 weeks old. So far he's a very 'easy' chilled out baby. EBF so far and happy to be left in his Moses basket/cot for sleeps.

This is all new to me, as I don't remember much from the first few weeks of DS1's life, due to a very traumatic birth and some PND. I do remember that feeding was hard and he would not settle anywhere other than in our arms. He never spent a single night or even a nap in the Moses basket.

DS2 just wants to sleep all the time. He wakes occasionally during the day, but would happily sleep 4/5 hours at a time. We get the odd period of wakefulness for 60/90 mins every day. But not much more. I offer him a feed every 90mins during the day and he always wakes enough for that and he is thriving weight wise. At night I don't wake him and he will go between 2.5-3.5 hours before waking for a feed.

I am just aware that he is sleeping a LOT. More than I expected. I expected short bursts of wakefulness every 2 hours or so as that's what we had with my first. I worry that he's just sleeping too much in the day, but perhaps that's normal?

Totally normal in my experience (my DS2 is 10 weeks).

Yep, definitely normal and nothing to worry about. I remember thinking the same when DS was born but it will soon change!

Newborns sleep for about 18hours a day so only 6 hours awake time by the time you have fed and changed your baby she is tired the six hours spent eating and being changed baby will be awake more than you think 6 feeds taking around 40mins each a bath and dry is 20mins, nappy changes maybe takes 5mins burping after each feed another five mins, a little coo and smile another 20mins , it all adds up I bets she’s fine and sleeping th3 normal amount, try and chill enjoy the newborn sleepy phase.

Thing is, he feeds very quickly, 10-15 minutes and he's done. So I'd say he's only really awake for 15 mins at a time when feeding. I really doubt he's awake for 6 hours in total a day. Maybe 4 at a stretch! He was just awake for a bit but wanted a feed and I think he only wanted the feed to comfort himself back to sleep!! I am enjoying it, it's just a world away from my first!!
