sleeping bag alternatives

So I have always used a sleeping bag for my little boy at night, now 18 months, and never had a problem. They're particularly good for him as he throws himself around the cot all night. In the last week he has started getting hysterical when we try to put it on him, and tries to tug it away from his feet. If (when!) he wakes in the night, he also tries to pull it off and its getting quite hard to soothe him enough for him to go back to sleep. In fact the last couple of nights I have undone the zip and then zipped it up again once he has gone back to sleep.
Has anyone experienced this? I wonder if its too small for him, but its an 18-36 month bag. Or if its just a phase and I need to wait it out?Any ideas for alternatives that will stay on a little boy who is a very restless sleeper?
Thank you!

We’re having similar - DS is 22m. The first thing he says in the morning is ‘bag’ while pulling at the poppers and kicking his feet.

I’m looking at the Gro-to-Bed - a pillow, fitted sheet and duvet that all zip together so he can’t kick it off.
