2 naps to 1... help!

I think DS is starting to move to one nap but I’m not sure. He’s 12 Months. His morning nap is getting later and later and he needs more help getting to sleep than before. His nap is now starting about 10.15 but today he didn’t nap just had long cuddle and was very still! He usually sleeps in his crib and settles himself. We put him down later and he went off like a dream today.

Usual nap times are
10.15 (40min)
2.30 (1h20)

I’m going to try one longer nap but when is best to start it? Too early and he’ll want another!

Any other advice when moving to one??

No advice per se unfortunately as we haven't made that transition yet but just to say that I've read that there's apparently a sleep regression that affects naps around 12 months. So they make you think that they don't need a second nap but they do and the nap troubles just pass in a couple of weeks. So it might be that? Although of course every child is different and some transition early, so trust your instincts

I transitioned to one nap because the second nap was becoming a struggle. We just moved to an earlier lunch (around 11.30-12) and then put him down for a nap straight afterwards. It worked well. He was a little bit grumpy for a few days but soon adapted

Drop the morning nap. Lunch at 11am. Nap 12-2 .....

I followed the 234 Routine and worked a treat 👍🏼👍🏼

I don't think our nap timings matched, but DS used to wake 6am ish. When he was ready to drop morning nap (which was usually about 8.30am for 30 minutes), we just did lunch at 11.30/11.45am, and he was sound asleep from noon til latest 2pm (sometimes 2.30pm if I was lucky!). Still went to bed latest 7pm. Until at 19 months dropped all naps and bedtime suddenly became 6.30pm for a while!

Dd dropped 2nd nap around 14m. She had it earlier though - 9ish for 45 mins. It took a little while for her to sleep longer than her 1.5h pm nap for a while and we resorted to 2 naps/1 nap alternate days as she is horrible without enough sleep. If she had 1 shorter nap she would be falling asleep in her dinner! Still struggle to push her bedtime to 7pm some night (she’s an early riser no matter what time she goes to bed!)

I'm following with interest as I'm going through the same thing with my 14 month old.

When with me, she has a morning nap about 3 hours after she wakes for the day. I wake her up after 25-30mins then 3 hours after that, she has an afternoon nap for 1.5-2 hours. Some days she wakes after less than 1.5 hours, refuses to go back to sleep and is grumpy for the rest of the day.

If I'm working and she's with childminder/grandparents, she absolutely refuses the morning nap and usually doesn't sleep much in the afternoon either (she's an expert at resisting sleep unfortunately).

From what I know, the transition is gradual and some days they will have 2 naps and others 1 which is where I am at right now but I'm not sure how to stop the 2 nap days as she's clearly tired after being awake for 3-3.5 hours and needs some rest. I'm also trying to compensate for poor sleep on my work days by getting 2 naps and allowing her to catch up on my days off but I'm going to be working more days soon so can't keep that pattern.

Yep my DS was 11 months when he went down to one nap. It was his afternoon nap we would spend ages trying to get him to sleep and he would only sleep for 5min or not at all, so we dropped it and he just had a morning nap anything between 1 or 2 hours.

We seem to be moving to one nap a day too. Although it seems to be up at 7am. And then nap from 10.30-1.30. He's struggling with it but more consistently this seems to be the pattern. He then goes to bed between 6.30-7pm. I can't seem to make him go as long as midday for a nap as he's really not a morning baby!

Fab thanks everyone! confusedhelpme does the 234 routine apply to one nap too? We kind of fell into a 234 routine accidentally
