13 month old waking for long periods in night

My little boy has never slept brilliantly, but after we sleep trained him at 9 months he definitely improved and we had a few weeks of decent sleep. Since he turned 1 at the end of November, his sleep has been all over the place - he will often wake for a long period in the night (1.5-3 hours), he’s generally not upset, just chatting to himself or lying awake. We’ve night weaned him so will go in periodically and tell him it’s sleepy time but he rarely goes back to sleep until at least an hour and a half after he’s woken.
On top of this, he’s started getting upset at bedtime - we used to be able to put him down and he’d roll around for a bit, possibly 15 mins or so, and fall asleep, but in the last month he’s got really upset, to the point of being sick. It’s not every night though, which is strange.
He naps well in the day, having between 2-2.5 hours sleep, tends to go to bed at 7, so I don’t let him sleep past 2.30 to make sure he’s tired enough. We’re starting to cut down to 1 nap a day, but he’s already only doing 10 mins about half 9 and then 2 hours 12.30-2.30, so not much different cutting it down.
Is this a phase, or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Baby and toddler sleep is not linear. There’s a development leap for standing and then walking. Sleep regression is par for the course.

Thanks, he’s been walking for a couple of months so don’t think it’s to do with that. It’s the fact that it’s been going on for a month that gets to me.

Hey, sounds like our boys are similar age, DS was also born end of Nov and just over 13 months. There is a sleep regression between 12-14 months, we went through it (I think! Fingers crossed) and it was not fun. And when they start walking they get excited about that too and it sometimes disturbs their sleep. But DS still has 2 naps a day - I think he needs them and he does sleep better at night when he's had two good naps and some good fun in-between (walking, playing, he's an energetic boy). Does it make a difference to his night time sleep if he's had two naps or one?

Our 17mo DD does this occasionally, seems teething/illness related with her. She'll do it maybe 2/3 times in a week and then either a tooth will appear, or the one time it didn't she had hand foot and mouth come out a couple of days later! She's happy in her cot, but wide awake and chatting or playing. Goes back down herself after about 3 hours.

We had next to no teething problems with her (extremely lucky!) until she turned 1 and the big buggers started coming through. I just desperately cling to the hope it's only going to last a couple of days each time!

Luckily we have a single bed in her room so whoever goes in with her just lies down and can doze until she goes off again...

Meant to say, she dropped to one nap about 12mo so haven't been able to tie it to too much daytime sleep...
