Do I need to sort out DS naps?

Quick sleep related question as I want to know if I need to make a change.
DS is 8 months old and will start nursery in April. He sleeps well at night (well... he wakes up multiple times but he goes to sleep in his cot by himself relatively easily) we have a well established bed time routine.
Problem is his day time naps. He takes two naps a day. The morning nap is usually either in the car or in the buggy as we are out and about. The afternoon nap is the longer one and he refuses to go down in his cot in the afternoon at all. He screams his head off. He will only go to sleep on me.
At the moment I am just doing what works, it also means I get to spend 1.5 hours each afternoon with a reason to rest as I am holding him while he sleeps.
But several people have pointed out that when he starts nursery he needs to go to sleep by himself in a cot in the day.
But selfishly I do love having a cuddle with him every day and I keep thinking he won’t stay little and cuddly for long.
Should I start trying harder to get him to sleep by himself in the afternoons?
