Should I drop my 17 month daughters morning nap

My daughter currently sleeps from 6.45pm until 5am. She then naps around 8.30am for an hour then again at 12.45 for usually an hour and a half. Do you think I should drop the morning nap then bring the lunchtime one a bit earlier? Most of my friends little ones are the same age and are having one nap a day but just feel it's a long time for my daughter to be awake from 5am until lunchtime! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks 🙂

My daughter dropped the morning nap around 14 months. For a few weeks we pulled her lunch nap forward and hour (to 12pm) and now she goes down at 12.30 everyday.

It does seem like a long time at first for them to be awaken but hopefully dropping the morning nap may mean she'll sleep in a bit later each day.

I thought she wasn't ready to drop it but at nursery she hadn't had a morning nap since a year- but then to be fair there was a lot more exciting things going on than we have at home.

Good luck!

She'll be complainy at first OP and you will need to literaly poke her to keep her awake. I had to do this...mine would try to nod off on the sofa but I'd start singing loud nursery rhymes bless her! She shifted it all round in about a week though.

I think my first was about 19 months when she dropped her morning nap, but she was a sleep queen.

My second dropped her morning nap at about 14 months. She was napping for 30 mins in the morning (having previously napped for an hour) and then refusing in the afternoon (having previously had an hour). Literally as soon as I stopped the morning nap and moved nap time to midday, she started sleeping for 2 hours and was much happier.

I agree that as soon as you make the change she'll probably start waking later in the day. Mine usually sleeps until 7 (yesterday was 8!).

Can you not delay getting up time? 5am is the middle of the night. Do babies that old still wake in the middle of the night?

Oh yes. Grin

I would drop the morning nap. As perkyduck says you might have to stagger it a bit to get to 12:30. We started after 11 and then just moved it later bit by bit.

Good luck. The consequence might be she sleeps a bit later in the am but who knows...

You’ll find she wakes later than 5am after a few days of pushing the nap back later and making it just one nap.

We are in a similar position with our -5 month old. Some very early starts beginning with 5 here 😴. She was have two lovely naps a day which she seems to be dropping down to one of her own accord. Rather than shock tactics of just dropping the morning nap we are pushing it back gradually. So we are currently at 10.30, will do that for a few days and then push it to 10.45 etc. She seems to be managing and now mornings begin with 6 rather than 5.. yippee 🙄

That should say 15 month old

I have tried everything get her back to sleep but she's just wide awake! Hopefully dropping the morning nap will help! I definitely need more sleep 😴
