Getting 6mo to nap in cot

Tried my best from birth to get ds2 to nap in cot, or generally just get himself to sleep, with no luck. So we’ve been rocking him to sleep for naps and then holding him. We can’t do this anymore for various reasons.

I’ve blocked out next week with no plans so I can concentrate on trying to get naps sorted in the cot. The problem is I have no idea where to start? My inclination is to rock and put down, gradually reducing the rocking as time goes on, but the problem is that ds2 resists this massively now - partly why we want cot naps at this stage - and it’s such a fight.

I don’t know whether to just put him down and hope that after a while he’ll ease into it. Or do PUPD? Or something else?

If you're currently holding him for daytime naps, is he cosleeping at night? Or are you able you get him to sleep in the cot at night? If so, you could do with mimicking the conditions that work at night.

If you cosleep at night, then it's unreasonable to assume you'll get cot naps in the day as the only time baby sleeps in the cot. You will need to tackle both night and day sleep at the sand time, if this is the case.
