Hi,

I know I should not complain but just wondered if anyone else had a child who sleeps lots and lots.
My dd(9.5mnths)seems to need loads of sleep. She sleeps 11 or 12 hours at night and has a least 2 long naps sometimes totally 3 or 4 hours during the day.
She is alert and full of life when she is awake and desperately trying to walk and getting us to help her walk around these days so I wondered if it was just she was using lots of energy when she was awake.
She has always slept really well so I don't often speak about it to friends as many of them have babies who are not great sleepers.

Anyone else in this situation????

DD is the same age and sleeps for roughly 11/2 hour naps twice a day and 11 hours or so night.

Thats good to hear Hercules. I had wondered if I was being cruel lettting her sleep for so long, but she seems to need it. She really lets you know when she is tired and wants a sleep.

If the extra sleep in the day isn't affecting her night sleep then don't worry! But I can see why you raised the question when it doesn't seem to be 'the norm'. It seems to be 'the norm' for her. Happy baby + tonnes of effort to progress = well needed sleep

LittleMissScatterbrain · 19/07/2004 20:59

PS. My ds at 9mo only had 2.25hr in day and 11hr at night. Seems all he needed..

Piffleoffagus · 19/07/2004 21:09

yep!
My dd had 2 lots of 2-4 hr naps per day and slept 12-13 hrs at night, at 21 mths she sleeps 13 at night and at least 3 hrs per day if at home during the day.

big sleeper!!!! Bliss!!!

kalex · 19/07/2004 21:20

Don't knock it. both mine slept like this, and I got to the stage where I didn't tell people, coz they thought I was lying

Just enjoy - wait til she six and knocking on your door to tell you to get out of bed

indamb · 19/07/2004 21:22

my dd was just the same at that age,and has loved her sleep from a newborn.
she is 2.8months now and sleeps 12 hours at night and still sleeps 1-1.5 hours in the day.

Happy dozing for all those lazy bones. and lots of rest's for mummy's.

Carameli · 20/07/2004 08:04

thanks for all your replies. I had started to feel like a bit of a lazy mother by letting her sleep so much. She certainly loves her sleep and is definitely progressing well when she is awake. Its funny really she won't crawl unless you really tempt her with a toy. Instead she just wants to walk around holding someones hands every minute she can.

My DD is the same Carameli. And i am getting sick of well meaning inlaws saying "she can't sleep 24 / 7 you know", as if i am forcing her to sleep. I basically follow her lead, if she is wingey and rubbing her eyes, she is tired, if she is not, she is wide awake! Simple!
I do worry that one day it will all change and she will become this monster that no longer needs sleep, so it is nice to here from others that sh may continue.
If she didn't sleep, when would i find time for mumsnet?

Bramshott · 20/07/2004 12:17

I think some children need more sleep than others. Mine has always needed a lot of sleep and still (18 months) sleeps 12-13 hours at night and sometimes as much as 2.5 hours in the day. She was born early so I've always attributed it to that but it's just as likely to be totally unrelated!

OldieMum · 20/07/2004 13:04

DD is 18 months. She sleeps for about 12-13 hours at night and 2-3 hours in the day. Whenever possible, I let her sleep for as long as she wants to. My attitude is that if she's sleeping, it's because she needs to. When she's awake, she has bags of energy.

codswallop · 20/07/2004 13:04

same here Om

Piffleoffagus · 20/07/2004 19:07

And today as if to spite all the anti's, dd added a late afternoon 1.5 hr nap between 3.30 and 5 and still is in bed at 7!!

Mirage · 20/07/2004 20:35

Mt 10.5 month old dd has always been a fab sleeper too.

She slept through the night at 9 wks & now goes to bed at 6.30pm,sleeps til 7.30amish,has a bottle, then goes back down until 10am if we don't have to be out early. She only has1- 1.5 hours during the day,but we worked out that she sleeps about 16-17 hours out of 24.But when she is awake she is constantly on the go.

I'd have half a dozen babies if they were all as fond of sleep as she is.

Grizzly · 21/07/2004 23:01

Carameli - DS did not sleep through the night till 6 months but now 11 months and sleeps 12 hours at night and 2 x 1 hours during the day. He's a gorgeous boy - bright, intelligent, alert, cheerful and only cries when he's tired. He rarely stays awake for more than 3 hours in the day. The most often repeated phrase in our house is 'you can't be tired, you've only just woken up' I think you're right - your dd is just using loads of energy when awake - she needs her sleep - don't we all. Can you remember what it was like to sleep for 12 hours? I certainly can't.

Spod · 24/07/2004 23:52

I would love it for dd to sleep for a decent daytime nap. she is 9 months, sleeps between 10-11 hours at night and currentlt only has two 30min naps in the day.....and she seems very content with this... I'm exhausted!!!
