Co sleeper cot

My lo 2 months currently co sleeps in bed but I want to buy a co sleeper cot/crib one she can sleep in for a while a year would be ideal! I'm moving abroad and new place is small not enough room for a stand alone cot.

Any suggestions that won't break the bank?

Most cotbeds and cots can have one side removed and are stable 3-sided. These are just normal cots, nothing special.

A cotbed will be most cost effective - it will last through to about 6 years old. Adjustable mattress heights means you can remove one side of the cot, wedge or fasten it to your bed and you have a cosleeper.

It's not a special product, just a normal cot or cotbed. It's something of a 'parenting hack' to make life easier without needing to spend extra money.

Most cots/cotbeds are flat pack, put together with an Allen key. They generally have 8 screws which fasten the four sides together and then four screws that fix the mattress base to the short sides - often there are three heights for the mattress base.

All you do to make it a sidecar cot is not attach one of the sides.

You then need to find a way to attach it to your bed. You could wedge it (as in push one side against a wall and the other your bed). Or you can get mattress connectors cheaply from Amazon. Or lash/tie it to the legs or base slats of your bed. Or use a large sheet to wrap around cot and bed mattress together. There are lots of methods.

IKEA does a cot called Gulliver that works for this. It's about £60 plus mattress.

I've done this with three cots In my time parenting - a cotbed from Mothercare, a dropside cotbed from John Lewis and a cot from Babies R Us.

Can I ask a stupid question about co-sleeper cots and cribs? What about your bedding? Is there not a risk of your duvet migrating into the cot, and is that not unsafe? I'm tempted by one, but not sure I understand how to use them!

I've always used a baby sleeping bag as the only bedding for baby, and swaddle when tiny.

As for my duvet, I can't think of a reason (even without a cot being next to me) to push out duvet off the side of the bed. If I need to shed the duvet, given it is shared with DH, that is dont towards the centre of the bed. Pulling it off towards the edge of the bed surely just pulls it off your partner? I mean, may be it's different if there is just you in bed, but seem a illogical in any situation for out duvet to do as you suggest.
