4yo bedtime battles

Ds2 has always been a poor sleeper but for the last few weeks bedtime has become an absolute nightmare.
We do all the usual bath, supper, story, sit on the floor routine but lately this has resulted in tantrums of epic proportions 1hr20mins tonight until he had screamed so much that exhaustion took over.
So please wise people of mumsnet give me your top tips for a better bedtime.

What is the 'sit on the floor' thing you mention? Are you staying with him to fall asleep? I'd suggest a process of rapid return if that's the case.

Has he just started school? If so we are having similar bedtime issues with our 4yo ds. Definitely worse in last couple of weeks. No advice I'm afraid but if we crack it I'll let you know and I'll follow this post for advice too.

If he's just started school I expect he's overtired and suggest trying earlier bedtime?

Sorry yes I stay in his room sitting next to him until he's asleep. Rapid return has great results with middle of the night waking but seems to escalate the tantrums earlier in the evening.
