Why can't my child sleep properly?

My daughter is 27 months. We have always had issues with her sleeping (see previous posts!) We weaned her off wanting a bottle at night, she responds well to sleep training.....but we always find ourselves back in a rut again with her waking on average 3 times a night.

I feel like if we give her an inch she takes a mile! If she's sick then obviously I tend to her every need, i'll give her some water to make her feel better and i'll sit with her for a bit as I can see she's unwell and needs company. BUT then it takes weeks for her to get back into normal habits again. She is very vocal and shouts/screams the house down until we come to her. Its very unsettling for my 5 year old who is at school and she always wakes him up.

The dentist said all her teeth are through now, so its not that.

I don't know what else to do - any advice on how to help her settle herself?? Running out of ideas....

I have a travel cot in my room. If toddler is wakes in the night unsettled, poorly, needs a bit of extra reassurance she gets picked up out of the cot in her room and sleeps in the travel cot next to me in my bed.

My daughter is almost 2 and never been a great sleeper. A few months ago it got worse, she wouldn't settle without me in the room and was waking several times a night. I just went with it (I know its not practical for everyone) I did the gradual retreat when I put her to bed and if she woke in the night I put her in with me. I just assumed she was feeling insecure about something and that it was the best way to get her over it. She now goes down no problem and still occasionally wakes in the night but its 90% better than it was

thanks for your replies!

FATEdestiny - we have tried the travel cot in room but she thinks its a right hoot and is even worse! She spends the whole time saying 'mummy where are youuuuuuu?' or 'daddy I can seeeeeee you!' So we gave up on that after a while!

issummeroveryet - this is what we've been doing, 'going with it'.....i'm just so sick of going with it. My patience is running on empty :( I guess I just have to hope it will improve as she approaches 3 :/
