8 week old - resists sleep during day and up every two hours at night

Hi all,

Am going to see my health visitor tomorrow to get some advice but could also do with some on here if possible.

My son is eight weeks old, he is gaining weight well (13 lb) but has quite bad reflux so is pretty uncomfortable most of the time.

He is now formula fed and will feed between every 2.5/3 hours.

The problem I have is getting him to sleep during the day. I do everything physically possible to get him to nap - rocking, cuddling, sling, pram, car, bouncy chair but he rarely naps for longer than half an hour if I do get him off (sometimes will be awake from 10-7pm with no sleep). I know he is tired because he will rub his eyes and yawn.

Night time he will sleep but wake every 2-3 hours for his feeds. As soon as he wakes for his 6am feed thats it he is up for the day.

He has 4-5 oz per feed.

Is there something I am doing wrong? I am just concerned that hes not getting enough sleep and its not like he sleeps through the night to catch up on it anyway!

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong st all. At that age a 30 minute nap isn't entirely unusual and my baby has always been a serial catnapper whatever I've tried. Try encouraging the nap on a dark room with white noise so do the usual rocking etc that you have been. Would baby sleep for longer on you? In a sling perhaps?

Babies with reflux react well to dummy sucking.

Naps lasting less than 1h are normal though. They just need to be frequent, so not long awake between naps.

Sounds just like my bf DS who is 8 weeks and sometimes windy so uncomfortable with that

Every 2- 3 hours at night seems normal, as does the 6am start.

Do you hold him for the duration of his naps? I always found that DS slept longer and better if I held him.

I could have written this post! My DS is 8 weeks and I'm in the exact same boat.

I literally try everything to get him down in the day and it's just pot luck what might work. And then if he does drop off it is never for more than 30 minutes. At night he can sometimes go for 3 hours but most of the time he wakes every 1-2 for feeds.

He's EBF and won't take a dummy. He hates the car and the pram so getting out the house is a nightmare. I wear him in a sling and he'll drop off for as long as I'm icing around. The minute I stop he wakes and screams to get out.

I feel for you charlieislovely - I worry too that DS isn't getting enough sleep. Today he cried so much that he has red bags under his eyes! Sad

As long as I'm "moving" around!

Icing around?!?!?
