10 month old sleep, at the end of my tether and HV has confused me

HV advised me to let my 10 month old cry but don't leave the room, keep lying him back down when he stands up. To start with naps because it's easier during the day. But it's not easier during the day because I'm having to leave my 3 yo watching TV while I try and get the baby to sleep. He is up once or twice a night and will basically only settle with me feeding him (bf). Dh has some success rocking him but it does his back in and then he usually wakes up after an hour anyway.

I'm really at the end of my tether. I need a full night's sleep and I need nap times to not be awful and take so long. I feel so bad for my dd who is on her own downstairs while I sort the baby out. And I feel so bad for the baby who has been crying for 25 minutes and won't stop whether I pick him up or rub his back or whatever I do.

Feeling totally useless tbh. And confused as to how on earth people do this!

I totally don't mean this to sound harsh but when you say you 'need' a full nights sleep... I know many parents who haven't slept for years - my husbands parents are constantly ribbing him saying he kept them up for 2 years. 10 months is still quite young, not all babies sleep through. I love this image for go to sleep advice.

Health visitors go to advice is always leave them to cry, not something I would ever do personally but that's me. What's does work for naps? Would he sleep lying down on your bed?
