How do breast fed babies go about going through the night?

Not sure if this should go here or on the feeding forum.. but, I am just curious really, I know that my 2 month old won't be doing this for a while...

So, how do babies go about going through the night. Do they just not wake up for their night feed one night, and go for a 6 hour+ stretch in one go? Or do they go longer and longer between feeds?

So, what did your baby do? (and only replies from those who DO go through please, as I realise many don't!!)

My dd1 just didn't wake up for a feed one night, and that was her sleeping through from then on.

I have a nearly 4 month old, he is BF, he will mostly go from about 9.30 till around 5 o'clock, though on the odd occasion he will wake around 3-ish. TBH, I don't know why or how he does it, it is just the pattern he has fallen into!

One thing that might give you a clue is my BF lady says if he starts to wake at night more, try to feed him more in the day, the less they eat in the day causes them to play catch up at night, so I do try to get him to eat more in the day if he has been awake in the night. Don't know if that helps, or makes sense???!

Natalie - did he suddenly go until 5.30, or did he do it gradually?

my dd is also nearly 4 months.

she brought her bedtime forward from 11pm to 10pm to 9pm and regardless of what time she goes to bed wakes at about 4ish for a feed. so she is now going 7 hours at night.

No he has more or less always woken between 5 and 6, no matter what other times he has woken before.

When he was first born from day one he fed loads in the evening, last feed at 11, then he would wake at 12, 3 and 6, the 12 oc'lcok feed dissapeared after a week or so, and he started to bring his last feed earlier so he was doing 9.30, 3, and 6, now the 3 o'clock feed is hit and miss but he may wake up an hour earlier.

I think they key is really the evening feeds, it is as though he making a store for the night!

agree. feed as much as you can in the evenings.

the're all different!!

baby1, started skipping feeds, first one then another, byy 3 months she was doing 12 hours straight

baby2, occasionallyy lasted longer, but was still waking up for milk at almost 18 months (though she had been on formula and then cows milk since 8 months), at which point I did controlled crying which worked a treat! (2 nights)
