Moving into a bed

Hi all. Sorry if this repeats any recent threads, but may I ask at what age you moved your child from a cot into a bed?

We've just tried it with our 19month old as the only other option was to have her in with us when people visit. Started well, but last night she woke and seemed really scared of her bed. Put her cot up and she was asleep within 2 mins! Grr.

age 2 for Dd. 2 and a half for ds. I wanted them contained for as long as possible

My ds was scared of his cot bed without the side until he was nearly 3. That's despite having a bed rail that was very similar height and look to the full side. We had three attempts at taking the side off permanently which failed. Then one day he asked for it to come off again and slept happily in it ever since.

If it's just for when you have visitors can you try a blow up bed like this?

It has slightly raised sides.

34 months. Tried at 26 months, too early, it went badly (after a great start).

At 34 started off with putting the mattress on the floor for naps and built it up. Into a bed after a week.

Took the side off the cot at 18 months. He hated his cot and screamed every time we put him in it. It made bedtimes so much easier, although he does now tend to create a nest for himself on the floor next to his bed and sleep there instead. Strange child.

All of mine were after their third birthday. Youngest is currently 2y10m and I have no intention of moving from the cot for a long time yet.

Babies get quite a lot of security from the enclosed "safe" feeling the sides of the cot give.

Is the issue just when you have guests? What about a travel cot?

MyCalmX · 19/07/2017 09:43

Dd1 was 3. Dd2 is nearly 2 and I've been considering it as she doesn't like her cot.

Thanks for all your replies. We'll leave her a while yet I think.

We have a 'corridor' bedroom, so when we have guests they use the double out the back. Her room is the corroridor one with a set of bunks. We tried her in the bottom bunk to stop having to have her in with us in a travel cot as when she wakes at 6am she sees us and wants to play. Otherwise she sleeps until about 8am in her travel cot in the corridor room.

So it's only on the time we have guests. Which is a fair bit as we live by the sea and it's the holidays!
