16 month old whats going on?

I have no idea what has changed but for some reason when my lb goes to bed at 7 he falls asleep on his own very easy but after 40 mins or so he will wake up screaming the house down. Can take me from 10 to 20 minutes to get him to calm down. He will then go back to sleep then around 11 he does the same again. He continues to wake up during the night either for a dummy or a drink. He is my 1st so any advice would be appriciated. Thank you

What do you do, when he wakes?

I wait a few minutes to see if he settles him self if he doesn't i see if he wants his dummy which most of the time he spits it out. I then try to calm him down patting/rubbing his back all else fails i pick him up. None of it works x

What is his daytime routine like, has it changed recently?

No its pretty new. He would normally wake up once during the night. I don't think anything has changed during his day routine.
He wakes up half 5 but will talk/play around in his cot till about half 6ish.
Breakfast by 8 by 9 gets dressed. Little play around then he has one nap at 11 for hr and half. Dinner then we go out for the day. Dinner about half 5/6 ready for bed at 7 x

Are you sure baby is having enough sleep

For comparison at that age my child was having 11h over night sleep plus 4h daytime sleep over two naps.

He did use to have 2 naps but he cut out the afternoon him self even when i've tried to put him down he kicks off. I've tried to get the morning nap a bit later on but failed! I'll check out the sleep chart now thank you x

Says on the chart 0 night feeds how can i stop him from having a bottle if hes thirsty? X

Over tiredness from lack of daytime sleep is likely to be much more of reason for night wakes - moresmore so than thirst.

A well hydrated child should not be waking in the night due to thirst. Indeed, even an 'only just hydrated enough' child (ie drinking just enough to not be thirsty, during the day but not enough to be well hydrated) should not be being raised from a deep sleep due to thirst.

If thirst is enough to disturb sleep, then the could needs to drink a lot more during the day. I suspect baby isn't actually that thirsty. It's more likely to be poor sleep hygiene.

Or is the drink a breastfeed? Because night breastfeeds are often needed for extended time. Not for hydration or calories, more for comfort and reassurance.

He's not breastfed, i only assumed he was thirsty as he sometimes won't take his dummy. To me he drinks a lot during the day. Today he slept from 11-1 so i'll see how he sleeps tonight. Thank you for taking the time to help me x

Could it be his molars coming through my son's sleep was seriously disrupted by these around your son's age. It was hell! I just had to wait it out after 4 weeks his teeth came through and now he's gone back to his old sleep patterns (touch wood)!!

Could be teeth or bad dreams? My ds had what we reckoned were bad dreams, usually coinciding with times when he was developing his speech or when he did other milestones.

I agree that if he's waking in the night for milk it's hard not to. We have a one bottle rule once they are 1, any subsequent wakings he gets offered water. Incidentally, our ds's sleep has improved substantially since he has come off toddler formula and gone into cows milk. He is currently 21 m and has always woken, sometimes several times, these last few weeks he has slept through quite a few times . Unheard of
