Please advise on 2 year old sleep problems

I don't know what to do. My 2.5 year old was, for the last year, a pretty solid sleeper. But in the last 6 weeks or so he's been waking several times a night. He gets into an instant panic when he wakes and screams/cries, runs out of his room in a panic looking for me.

He has had quite a lot going on the past couple of months: he started some preschool sessions, my Dad died, and I am pregnant (31 weeks).

But my question is what to do. Tried sleep training last week to get him to fall asleep by himself after I leave his room, like he always used to. It seemed to work the first couple of nights, but he's gone back to the night wakings now, and also talks all the time about how he doesn't like me leaving his room at bedtime. In desperation (I'm so tired with pregnancy, bereavement etc.) I'm wondering if maybe my husband should just sleep in my son's room with him on a sofa bed until he feels more secure (potentially this will be for the long haul, after baby's arrival, I can imagine), although that undoes the sleep training attempts? Or should we try to push on with more sleep training? Do you think it's just a phase and will settle down soon?

I would say it's a phase while he's processing the upheaval in his life. Personally I'd offer extra support through this time, with the view to withdrawing back to normal in a couple of weeks/months
