I would say as soon as he starts to pull himself up on the bars.

I keep forgetting to do ours and dd will swan dive over the bars onto our bed and then back in again as she pleases! Must do it

When he can pull himself up and looks in danger of toppling out!
Good question though, I'm wondering too coz my ds is about to crawl and pulls himself around quite well.
How old is your ds?

i did it when i heard a thud and DD2 was out of the cot on the floor

seemed ok though, she was quite proud of herself.

we did ours as soon as they showed any signs of being ready to pull themselves up
