Nightime coughing

Hi ds 1 is nearly 4 and last few days his night time coughing has stepoed uo a gear. Both my boys cough at night. But not much and it doesnt wake them. But ds 1 has been coughing more. And has now just coughed so much he was sick. I am in bed with him now and he is still coughing refusing to drink anything. I offered water and some squash also but nope he doesnt want it. We dont have any cpugh medicine. Its just sugar anyway. He refuses honey. He doesnt like it and kicka uo a stink. We eont have a humidifier. Bit the air is not dry. Its not cold or hot. Just in between. I have elevated his head and he seems to have drifted off. No temp. And he is not ill. He had a cold over a week ago but its cleared up. Planning on going to gp on monday. Anyone think it could be crouo or asthma at all?

Didn't want to read and run, but this happened to my DS the other day, same age. Nothing came of it and he is fine now. But I'm not a doctor, it might have just been an annoying tickle?

Prop him up with an extra pillow I always find this works great. It's Aiken to standing up.

There is a theory behind it but can't remember what!

Nighttime cough can be a sign of asthma. If persistent, get it checked.

Mine had the same symptoms. We were given a steroid shot and a blue inhaler and she's better now. Try ane. Good wishes

She has the asthma eczema and allergies. I dont have any but ds 2 has severe eczema covering his body. But it is under control now. and now i hope ds1 doesnt have asthma. I hope baby no 3 escapes all this. She will probably have the allergies!

Get a humidifier. We also didn't think the air was dry etc, but were at the end of our tether with it (even with using a preventer inhaler) and it's worked a charm.

I like having a fan blowing in my face when I have a cough. The cold and moving air seems to calm a tickly ťhroat.

My eldest son tends to cough until sick when overheating in the night. It need not be an overly hot night for that. Just a warm night and him falling asleep wrapped in te duvet will do it. He seems unable to kick his duvet off on his sleep, just gets hotter and hotter until he starts coughing and spluttering.

Sounds like it might be asthma. If so it is good to prop their head up with pillows in bed. Steam also helps - hold head over a bowl of steaming water, or even just going in a steamy shower/ bath has some instant relief. I remember being told that another tell-tale sign of asthma was a sort of see-sawing in the chest, pulling up under the ribs. My daughter and I both have asthma - I wheeze but I never hear her wheeze (that threw me for a while as I assumed it was only asthma with a wheeze). Croup sounds very distinctive - quite an alarming sound on the 'in' breath, it isn't just coughing in the night.

Ds is asthmatic, and always coughed at night. We later discovered that he is highly allergic to house dust mite.

Try washing ALL bedding, including duvet, pillow curtains teddies at 60 or above. Use a decent mattress cover that covers the whole mattress. And dustmite cover on pillow. Avoid carpet in bedroom if possible. DS asthma and night coughing pretty much stopped the instant that we did all of that!

Watching with interest as I could of written this post. My ds will be 4 next month and I've been backwards and forwards to the doctor with him to no avail. He coughs a lot at night, when he runs, when it's cold etc but doesn't always sound wheezy. They won't give an asthma diagnosis as he's too young and won't refer him either?!

Just that he's too young to be diagnosed, it's a "viral induced wheeze" even though he's not been wheezy some times. Asthma is very strong on both sides of the family and I've got that, eczema and allergies myself so I'm fairly certain that's what he has I don't think there's many other explanations for a constant cough like that?! Every month he seems to catch a cold/cough and has a constant runny nose too. I've started keeping a diary to show the gp. I've got a dd and she is fine so I know I'm not being an over the top protective mother.

Did they suggest it might be anything else at all or just dismiss it?
Its fristrating isnt it. Its already so difficult to gef an appointment. And then im sure they woukd need to be referred to a specialist. But if they are too young... how can you be too young to be diagnosed? They just have to suffer until they get to that magic number...

Sorry I've just saw this, yes it is really frustrating. I'm pretty sure it's asthma but sometimes they make me doubt myself. Anyway I'm going to the doctors on Monday and going to ask to be referred, I have my diary and pictures of the other morning when he woke up with some kind of allergic reaction all over his face- just another aspect of it
