Transition from cot to cot bed

Wondering at what point this happens? My DD is 16 months and wondering when I take the sides off her cot to turn into a cot bed or if I transfer her straight into a larger bed?

Got another baby due June so am thinking about the possibility of not having to buy another cot.

Got a chicco next to me for baby, who'll likely be with us for 3-5 months so that puts us at Sept- Nov when id hope to move him/ her into own room. DD will be 2 and a month then....

What did people do? Do you think we'll need 2 cotbeds?

Thanks

DS was in a full size bed by 18 months after a couple of months on the floor on the city mattress which he LOVEDGrin

My DD is the same age and has been in a toddler bed since Christmas. It has two wee short sides. My friend's DS (same age) sleeps in a full size single mattress on the floor which he loves.

As you've got another baby on the way, I'd get your eldest a proper bed and reuse the corner for the new baby. My 2 went from cot to the IKEA kritter bed which is perfect as it has low side guards. It's also very cheap (mattress extra) so I don't mind buying this for them to use from approx 2 to 6 and then getting them something more grown up and long lasting later on.

Cot not corner

Ds2 was 11 months when we took the aides off his cot. He kept waking himself up by bashing the sides. He loved it.

Brill thanks for all your suggestions. Will aim to get DD out of cotbed by the time new baby needs it. Like the ikea bed suggestion- thanks. Has anyone Any other recommendations for a rail you can add to the side of a child's bed? Thanks
