6 month old - long night wakings

My son is 6 months and his sleep has deteriorated terribly in the last month or so. He is waking in the night - that is fine, we all wake at some point during the night. However he is awake for a minimum of an hour.

During this time he chats, rolls about but once he has had enough he struggles to settle himself back to sleep.

So he starts crying, I give him his dummy and comforter, leave the room. The crying starts again and I repeat this cycle. He ends up really upset so I bring him into bed with me so we can sleep for a couple of hours before it's time to get up.

I don't want this to continue and don't want to create a rod for my own back. He needs to learn to self soothe but I don't know where to begin. I want the dummy to go but have no idea how.

I just want my poor baby to sleep better

6 month sleep regression - we had to ride it out I'm afraid.
