5 Month Old - Not sleeping and screaming

Hi,

We have a 5 month old, he were doing quite well in relation to sleeping, however for this last week it has been awful.

Every time we try put him down for a nap he screams the place down, then on an evening we have the same. He just screams the place down.

It is like he feels like he is missing out on something so he wont sleep. He eventually goes down but only after ALOT of screaming.

Any advice would be great!

Over tiredness causes "The Rage" in a baby. How much daytime sleep is baby getting?

I'd be expecting about 11 hours of night time sleep and 4-5 hours of daytime sleep. This could be split between 3, 4, 5 or 6 naps, depending on how long the naps are.

How are you getting baby to sleep?

Dummies are amazing. As is movement. I favour relentless bouncy chair bouncing and dummy holding-in for daytime napping.

On an evening we bath him around 6:30-7pm, go into the bedroom with him after he is dressed. He has a 7oz feed before bed and sometimes he goes down easily some times not so easy!

He then wakes around 2 times up untill around 6am but it can sometimes be sooner or later.

When he wakes around 6ish we then try for a nap usually around 2-3hrs later. However he just refuses them, having spoke with the HV they have advised us to wean him as he is quite a big baby. so they have advised around 25oz a day with 3 small meals (baby rice)

He used to nap really well its just this past month.

Milk is the Most calorie dense foodstuff baby can have. For example 8oz volume of formula milk (or breast) will have significantly more calories in it than 8oz volume of baby rice, or anything else.

Baby is probably very hungry. In that he needs the calories.

For comparison, my 91st centile daughter (so also a big baby) was drinking between 50-55oz of formula a day. I was making 8 8oz bottles per day, she was drinking at least 7oz from each bottle. She was fed 2 to 2 and a half hourly through the daytime.

So for example with a 6am wake up I would try:

6am - 8oz feed
7.30am - sleep (dummy, bouncy chair, relentless bouncing)

8am - 8oz feed
9.30am - sleep

10.30am - 8oz feed
12pm - sleep

12.30pm - 8oz feed
2pm - sleep

3pm - 8oz feed
4.30pm - sleep

5pm - 8oz feed - keep awake
7.30pm - 8oz feed and bedtime
10.30pm - 8oz dream feed

That's 8 bottles throughout the daytime. Plenty of calories and lots of regular naps.
