6 mth old - nap-time rebel!

My previously perfect napper (well, pretty much so) has, over the last week or so, started to resist all attempts to nap. He generally goes down in the morning approx 2 hrs after waking and either won't sleep at all or will take maybe 15 mins, then wake and I'll pick him up for a min and put him back and he may or may not go back to sleep for anything between 0 mins and 40 mins.

Ideally I'd like to get him down for his a/noon nap about another 2 hrs after he wakes up but due to having to collect DS1 from nursery and give them both lunch etc this can often be 3 hrs ... he'll grumble and go to sleep but again wakes after half an hour, can possibly be comforted once and may sleep for another 30 mins or, as with the last 2 days wakes after half an hour and that's that. Today he grumbled, 'shouted' and generally gave out with a bit of screaming thrown in for good measure for 45 mins before I gave up.

Any suggestions - I'd really like to get these naps knocked into shape as he's waking frequently during the night and I'm a great believer in 'sleep begets sleep' per Weissbluth (Heatlhy Sleep Habits, Happy Child - brilliant book but not helping at the moment!!).

Thanks.
