We have always been really lucky with our ds and sleeping, waking for a feed and then settling again straight away until the last few weeks...

He doesn't settle, screams and screams refusing to sleep when he eventually falls to asleep he's awake within an hour and won't sleep in his cot which means he has to come in with us which terrifies me and I don't sleep properly. Permanent co sleeping is not something I'm willing to consider but please any other ideas?!

Teaching baby to sleep deeply and sleep well essentially comes down to:

  • feed, feed, feed and more feed. If doubt, feed first.
  • sleep as often as possible. Limit awake time to as least as you can. 30-40 minutes awake between one nap and the next through the daytime would be fine. 1h awake time at the outside.
  • make getting to sleep as easy as possible and as quick as possible. Use every trick in the book.
* sucking (dummy or feed to sleep) * movement (rocking, pushchair, bouncer) * secure feeling (swaddle, tucked in, cuddle in arms) * reassuring presence (hand on chest, cosleep, cuddle)
