Newborn wants to sleep on side

My baby is now 7 days old. All week he hasn't wanted to sleep in his bed so I've been co sleeping ( badly as I've been worried he'll die )

Tonight is the first night he's let me put him on his own and it's been around 2 hours now and he's slept peacefully on his side.

I've got a sensor mat that will sound off if he stops breathing,

The midwife was adamant about putting him on his back and because he's so small I'm even more worried about him ( 4lb 14oz )

But Everytime I put him on his back he wakes up

If I've got the moniter he'll be ok won't he? I don't know what to do,

He was up at 2:30, 5:30, 7:30 and then slept through till 11:30. Woke up and he was on his side again, feel a bit better off 3 hours straight sleep but I was up most the night vomiting. I think it's the lack of sleep that's doing it,

Thanks everyone for your advice, I know it will get easier in time but 8 days of broken sleep is really kicking my ass, I cannot function without a proper sleep x

It might be worth resetting your expectations. You're likely to have highly broken sleep for the best part of 6 months, quite possibly 12 months.

Two wake ups a night is very good going in terms of sleep.

Try going to bed early and sleeping during the day to catch up on your sleep.

Aw I know, I just forgot how hard it was. With my daughter I could nap during the day when she did, but she's 2 and I have a newborn so napping during the day isn't an option.

We all went up to bed at 8pm, any earlier and my daughter would be up at 6am.

He's been asleep for 3 hours now, I need him to switch his sleep patterns around he's great during the day then wide awake at night

If it was just us two it would be a lot easier because I could sleep when he sleeps, my daughter doesn't nap and will not be forced to either x
