Dummy advice/help please

Hi.
My lo turned a year last week. She has had a dummy since 2 months for sleep in cot, car and buggy and when she needs comfort. I very rarely use it other than the above. Someone mentioned that now shes one coz of ear infections and habit I should wean her off it asap. I was planning on doing it when she can understand a reward or the dummy fairy etc. Has anyone got any advice or experience? It seems mean. She has a dummy sleepytot bunny so dummy attach to it and she settles herself through out night. Thanks xx

I would let her be, if she only has it for sleeping or when she needs some extra comfort I don't see an issue. My DS just gave his up and he's nearly 3, he only had it at bedtime and one night we just didn't give it to him and he hasn't asked for it once, I think it was more of a habit for us to give it to him. Your DD is still young, maybe give it a few months and see how you feel then, but imo there's no harm in her having a dummy.

All my kids had one to sleep /when upset /poorly or in the car in a long drive!! They all gave them up when they were old enough to hand them over willingly! - surely a bit harsh to remove their comforter when they don't know why??? They were about 3 and not one has any speech problems or wonky teeth!!

My DS is 21 months old and we have (as of yesterday) gone cold turkey on the dummy. He has(had!) it more than your little one (apart from at nursery when he only had it for naps, so I know he doesn't really need it).

Yesterday morning he threw a dummy across the room and it ended up under the sofa. DH pocketed it but DS went looking for it as he wanted it back. We said it was lost, leading to the most almighty tantrum. So we decided that enough was enough and he wasn't having one any more. Might as well go through the pain of that tantrum for a reason.

I thought we were in for an awful night but it actually wasn't so bad. And hopefully it will improve as he learns to properly self settle. He has mentioned the dummy a few times but I've just reminded him that we lost it and he seems to accept that explanation. Weirdly he didn't ask for it at all at bedtime.

Thanks for your replies. I also think its mean but you no what its like when someone says something and it makes you wonder. How about soft teats on bottles?I have read they need to weaned of this to coz of comfort! She has them for morning and night milk feeds atm and tommie tippee for water im day. She wont have milk out of t.tippee.All these rules!

DS has a proper bottle just at night now for his milk (dropped from morning and night at about 18/19 months). Water is out of sippy cups - his favourite is a munchkin 360 which I think is a really clever design.
