How do you get them to nap when they can stand up?

Help! My 10 month old can pull herself up to standing. Getting her to nap in her cot is now pretty much impossible as she's like a jack in the box. As soon as I put her down she pops straight back up again. She is perfectly able to get herself down again, but she doesn't.

What am I supposed to do? ?

Keep putting her back down until she eventually gives up! It might take 30 tries but she will give up. Happened to my LO when he learned to stand up.

I know that this is a controversial topic, but what worked for me was leaving her for 5-10min before going in to lay her down again with minimal interaction (you don't want to turn it into a game). She should eventually get the hint. The other thing that helped me was having a clear nap routine. Nothing special but just a quick cuddle and a breastfeed to let her know it's nap time. I think it's worst when they're just starting to master their new skill, and pretty soon the novelty will wear off I hope!

We have a very good routine and clear wind down for nap time, so she definitely knows it's sleep time. I've been doing the going in, putting down, minimal interaction thing for about 3 weeks, and it's just getting worse. How long before she gets fed up? It's driving me bonkers!

I followed the advise in the Kim West sleep book - in short, I'd lay him back down the first time. If he sprung up again, which was very likely, I would simply pat the mattress a little distance away and after a little bit he would tend to foll my hand and collapse down. Or if that wasn't working in a reasonable timeframe, I would just leave the room and leave him to it. There were definitely times when he literally 'fell' asleep from standing. It was good to feel like there was some sort of plan to follow, and I still use this advice now he is over two of he bounces around the cot. It makes it clear what you want him to do and means you aren't driven mad putting him down only to see him spring up over and over again.

It will pass( don't you just hate it when someone says that as it always feels like it won't). . . But it will. I would go with coco, wait five mins before putting back down. Do this for over a week or more if need be. She wants to practise her new skill and you might just have to let her get on with it until it isn't novelty anymore. My DS did this with each milestone, it drove me insane. Once he learnt to lie down himself it got easier. I used to put him in his cot, when it wasn't nap/bedtime and try and play games where he would sit,stand and then encourage him to lie. This also gave him the opportunity to practise skills at more appropriate times.

Keep with it, my DS is 14 mo now and very rarely will stand up in his cot unless something upsets him then I am straight by his side. Good luck x x

Ps if she gets straight back up after you have laid her down still wait five mins before lying her back down. If I didn't do this with DS it felt like a fight and he got frustrated. It is hard but being as calm as possible helped me in the end x x

Thanks for the tips. I will try leaving her 5 mins before lying her back down. And patting the mattress to encourage her to get down. We have been getting into a frustrating fight trying to repeatedly put her down so I want to avoid that!

My son is the same. So I put him in his pram for naps.
