Night terrors?

I'm typing this next to a hysterical 19 month old. This has been going for 45minutes. No comforting seems to work. Doesn't want to be held or cuddled. Managed to get some calpol into her half hour ago. Tried to whisper stories and have white noise on. Sure she isn't poorly.
Any tips? She barely calms for a minute before screaming again

I had awful night terrors when I was young, my parents used to use weird distraction techniques on me like dancing around like crazies! It would distract me so much trying to work out what the hell they were doing id subconsciously stop thinking about being upset.

Weird I know but getting her to focus on something super hard will really help. It works with hiccups and panic attacks too.

My DD has been having these for years, every night sometimes 2-3 times and can last 5 minutes to 4 hours! (Those are particularly bad ones) we've tried everything to help and have been given some great advice. It didn't help DD but it may help you!! Let me have a look at what I've got quick.

Oh gosh 4 hours?!

Op my DS had these when he was little. If it's any consolation he grew out of them by the time he started school. I would try to hug him but he didn't want it so I would just sit and say it's ok, I'm here, over and over again. It's so hard seeing your DC so distressed isn't it, but if it's anything like my ds, she won't have any recollection of it afterwards, which is a blessing.

His didn't start as early as yours though, so will hopefully not last until school!

Needing the toilet but I'm assuming DC is still in nappies?

Try to gently wake them up, this can be tricky and sometimes quite a scare for you and DC! But worth a try?

Also do you have any liquid piriton? We were prescribed this to give every night and it's also a light sedative. Obviously I'm not a trained professional it's entirely up to you wether you do or don't do it!

Normally DD eventually "wakes up" and I can get simple yes or no answers from her so I tend to eliminate what's wrong and go from there.

As hard as it is, try and keep DC calm and you also stay as calm as you can't which is really bloody difficult.

Markruffalo it's been very few times lasting that long and it was far from pleasant. Myself and DD ended up both crying and one point I think! We've actually been sent to a specialist FINALLY! So that's a relief!

Thank you. I just took her outside- thought we'd go for a drive but she was so hysterical I bottled it as don't want to be driving knackered in the middle of the night. Came back and put tv on. She seems to be awake and calm now. But very awake . If it is a night terror, and -judging by her complete change in temperament I'm guessing it is- it lasted over an hour and a half. Hoping it won't become a regular thing and wondering how the hell I'm getting her back to sleep tonight
I'll try the crazy dancing tomorrow if it happens again!

I replied (very slowly) when there was just the one response. Thank you for all the tips. Yes still in nappies. She's no stranger to liquid piriton for sleep eczema symptoms. She'll be having some tomorrow night. Now just hoping in the night garden will make her sleepy

She'll nod off soon enough.
