Co sleeping cribs- side open while asleep?

We have been given a John Lewis wooden crib with a side that slides down, but the slide is a bit sticky and clunky.

I thought not a problem as I imagined that the side stays down all night but DH thinks that you have it up most of the time and only slide down to lift out the baby for breastfeeding/ cuddles etc.

Can/should the side next to the bed stay down? There's a strap to attach to the bed.

They say you're not supposed to, but we slept with the side down on our Bednest co-sleeper until just recently (DS now 5 months) as he can now roll - even though technically he'd just roll into our bed I still freak out that he may roll into a gap or something!!

Look up the official instructions. The accident that happened with the baby in the bednest last year was due to the proper instructions not being followed. If you don't have them, contact John Lewis.

Personally I had the side down most of the time on my snuzpod but she was in a sleepyhead in it so it stopped her rolling into our bed but I was still mindful to have my duvet well away from her side of me

You're not supposed to leave the side down sadly. Babies can move in odd and surprising ways! We played it safe and kept it up - however, we eventually ended up doing quite a bit of cosleeping (carefully following guidelines) which was fab for night feeds...and only used cot I'm early evenings
