dcb I wish I could help you! I tried pu/pd with ds at abt 3mths. Bloody useless. He cried so hard and was so utterly confused that I gave up. I kind of think it is probably better either not to pick them up at all or to do what you know will get them to sleep. In essence take the hard line or put up with it iyswim??? hth

PU/PD wound my baby up something chronic.

In the end, I decided to try a variation of sh/pat (another baby whisperer thing) but I left her in the cot, held her hand and shushed loudly next to her ear until she settled. If she was getting revved up, I put my arm over her legs so that she couldn't thrash about. Once she was calm I left the room.

I think this was better for us because it didn't confuse her by giving her a way of getting out of her cot.

If you have a look at the Baby whisperer site, there are lots of useful tips on there about both techniques.

plibble - I'm with you on that one. I haven't done the shh/pat thing but I do think it sends a clear message instead of mixed messages.
